The Challenges:

A boutique rural hotel operating in the Scottish Highlands approached Omega Energy Services with a pressing issue: their aging oil-fired heating system was not only inefficient and expensive to run, but also contributed significantly to the property’s environmental impact. Fluctuating oil prices made budgeting unpredictable, and the hotel’s remote location often complicated fuel deliveries. Additionally, the owners wanted to align with growing customer demand for eco-conscious accommodation while ensuring uninterrupted comfort for guests throughout the year.

Solution:

After a detailed energy assessment, Omega Energy Services recommended the installation of three high-capacity air source heat pumps (ASHPs) capable of meeting both the heating and hot water requirements of the entire facility. These systems were carefully integrated into the existing infrastructure, which included a mix of radiators and underfloor heating. Our engineers installed thermal storage tanks and smart controllers to maximise energy efficiency and allow temperature regulation by zone, providing tailored comfort for guest rooms and common areas alike.

Results:

Since the installation, the hotel has achieved a 50% reduction in heating-related energy costs. The ASHP system operates cleanly and efficiently year-round, even in colder months, and requires significantly less maintenance than the previous oil system. The hotel’s carbon emissions have dropped substantially, supporting its goal to become a low-carbon hospitality provider. The owners also benefited from available government incentives, such as the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), which helped offset the initial installation costs. Importantly, the project has enhanced the hotel’s appeal to environmentally conscious travellers and increased occupancy during the off-season thanks to its green credentials.
