Comprehensive Renewable Energy Upgrade for a Semi-Detached Home

Clients: Jane & Dirk, Haddington, East Lothian

Challenge: Jane & Dirk’s modern timber kit semi-detached property was heated using electric direct panel heaters, supplemented by a log burner. The electric heating resulted in very high energy bills, leading them to leave some rooms unheated, and they noticed significant temperature differences between rooms. Managing a steady supply of dry wood for the log burner became an increasingly labor-intensive task.

They contacted Home Energy Scotland, which guided them to the Warmer Homes Scotland Scheme, managed by Warmworks Scotland.

They were awarded a grant to fund the supply and installation of:

  • Air Source Heat Pump
  • Hot Water Cylinder
  • Radiators & Pipework
  • Solar PV System
  • Storage Battery

The Challenges:

  • The property was built on a poured solid concrete slab, making underfloor pipework and wiring installation impossible.
  • Limited routing options for new services due to modern fitted bathrooms, en-suite, and kitchen.
  • The home was freshly decorated throughout, meaning post-installation work had to minimize redecoration requirements.

How We Helped:

We conducted a technical survey to assess all challenges and the clients’ specific needs. A detailed room-by-room heat loss survey determined the correct specification for the heat pump, cylinder, and radiators. Clear communication was maintained throughout to ensure a smooth installation process.

Additionally, a roof survey was performed to design the solar PV and storage battery system.

The Results:

  • Installed a 5kW Vaillant Arotherm Plus heat pump & hot water cylinder, along with new radiators and pipework, positioned as per the pre-agreed layout.
  • Flooring and pipe/cable routes were restored, with carpets replaced, minimizing redecoration needs.
  • Solar PV system installed on the roof, supported by a Duracell Hybrid Inverter and Storage Battery.
  • The system now provides comfortable whole-home heating and hot water, supplemented by solar energy and battery storage.
  • Significantly reduced energy bills and improved energy efficiency, allowing Jane & Dirk to enjoy a warm home with minimal running costs.
